Vortrag von Prof. H. Glenn Penny (Iowa): Beyond Colonial Questions: Writing about Germans Abroad in the Modern Era

What is at stake in crafting narratives of German history? Where do they start, where might they end, who is included, and who should be left out? The answer, of course, depends in part on the tales we want to tell and the questions we seek to answer. In this presentation, H. Glenn Penny engages the histories of Germans in the American Midwest and in Central America in order underscore the transcultural lives and transnational habitus of many Germans in the Americas between the 1880s and the 1930s. The discussion, however, entails more than that: it will be about belonging, about the limits of histories driven by the lives and fates of nation states, and the ways in which studying Germans abroad forces us to push beyond colonial questions when asking about Germans' engagement with the non-European world.
