Coal in Modern Britain. A Social and Cultural History, 1830–1940
Historians have long considered the economic, technical, political dimensions of coal. I would like here to focus on how coal was used on a daily basis by British consumers, at a time when Britain was seen as a “coal-minded” society. How did one light and maintain a fire, or cooked with coal? How did the constant and very tangible presence of coal in daily lives change worldviews? How was coal taught to children, and how did it interfere with the gender balance of households? Such a material approach will help highlighting some of the issues of energy transitions
