Bridging the Gap in Mental Health Care for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) by Reducing Stigma. A Comparative Study of Interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa
People living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) experience a much higher burden of mental health challenges, especially depression and anxiety. This is partly due to the stress of the illness but also most significantly, the stigma surrounding HIV.
Stigma can lead to discrimination, isolation, and fear of disclosure, all of which worsen health outcomes. While treatments for HIV have improved dramatically, stigma remains a major challenge. A study comparing interventions to reduce stigma and improve mental healthcare access for PLHIV in different settings could be very valuable. It could identify the most effective strategies based on local contexts and best practices. Ultimately, reducing stigma and improving mental health care access can significantly improve the lives PLHIV.
The purpose of the project is to improve mental health outcomes and overall wellbeing of PLHIV by reducing stigma.
The specific objectives of the project are:
- Compare the effectiveness of different interventions developed to aid in stigma reduction and improve mental health outcomes for PLHIV in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Assess the influence of contextual factors such as cultural background, healthcare infrastructure, and social support systemson the impact of these interventions.
- Identify best practices for reducing stigma and improving mental health outcomes for PLHIV that can be implemented in diverse settings.
- Identify gaps in the literature on stigma reduction interventions for PLHIV, and recommend areas for future research.
The findings of this research is expected to provide: a comprehensive overview of the available evidence on HIV stigma, its impact on the mental health of PLHIV and the potential benefits of stigma reduction; highlight evidence-based strategies for tackling stigma, address intersectionality and nuance to improve the lives of PLHIV.
